A bowl of freshly made flaxseed hair gel, showcasing its smooth and slightly frothy texture. The golden hue reflects its natural, chemical-free ingredients, perfect for nourishing and styling hair.

As a mum of two, with a young gymnast who practices three times a week, finding the right hair products has been a journey. My daughter’s hair is thin and fragile, and drugstore hair gels often come with harsh chemicals that do more harm than good. That’s why I’ve turned to making my own natural flaxseed hair gel. Not only does it keep her hair perfectly in place during her routines, but it also nourishes, strengthens, and adds a beautiful shine without leaving any unsightly white residue.

I made this hair gel for my daughter, and to my amazement, it really works! –Anna

This homemade solution has been a game-changer for us, and I’m excited to share the recipe with you. It’s simple, effective, and filled with natural goodness—perfect for busy families who want to avoid unnecessary chemicals.

DIY Flaxseed Hair Gel

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons flaxseeds (golden or brown)

  • 1.5 cups water

  • 1-2 drops of lavender essential oil, optional

Instructions

  1. Boil the water: In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil.

  2. Simmer with flaxseeds: Add the flaxseeds to the boiling water, reduce the heat to medium, and simmer. Stir occasionally as the water thickens and becomes frothy.

  3. Strain the gel: Once the mixture reaches a gel-like consistency, strain the flaxseeds using a fine metal sieve. Work quickly, as the gel will thicken as it cools, making it harder to strain.

  4. Add essential oils: Stir in the lavender essential oil for added nourishment and a lovely scent.

  5. Store properly: Pour the gel into a clean container and store it in the fridge. It should last up to 10 days, or until it becomes cloudy.

Application Tips

  • For styling: Apply to damp or dry hair to define curls, tame flyaways, or secure updos. Perfect for both everyday looks and high-performance gymnastics styles!

  • For skincare: Some people even use flaxseed gel as a nourishing skin treatment—a bonus if you’re into multipurpose products.

Notes

  • Brown flaxseeds often produce a darker gel and may yield more product compared to golden flaxseeds. Feel free to experiment with the water-to-flaxseed ratio to achieve your preferred consistency.

  • If straining is a hassle, you can boil the flaxseeds in a reusable tea strainer or muslin bag. This method keeps things tidy while still extracting plenty of gel.

  • For a longer shelf life, consider adding a natural preservative and ensure the pH level aligns with your chosen preservative’s requirements.

Why Flaxseed Gel?

Whether you need a strong hold for an active lifestyle or simply want to embrace a more natural hair care routine, this DIY flaxseed gel is a must-try.
