WhatsApp groups can be a fantastic resource for parents navigating the challenging world of grammar school exam preparation. However, as with any community, it’s essential to approach these groups with caution and clarity about their purpose. Below, I’ve outlined my experience with some popular 11+ WhatsApp groups, along with tips on how to make the most of them.

1) 11 Plus Free Study Material

This group offers free resources in PDF, scan, or image format. While it might be tempting to join, it’s worth noting that the admin does not have the permission of book authors to distribute the content, making this an ethically questionable practice. Additionally, the admin has a reputation for removing members without warning, so be careful about the questions you ask.

Why Consider This Group?

  • If you’re struggling to afford books, this group could provide access to resources.

  • Missing answers from a specific book? You might find them here.

  • Searching for a particular resource that’s unavailable for purchase? This group might have it.

Key Caution: I do not promote or endorse this group, but I’ve included it for parents who may benefit from such resources.

2) XLEducation - Everything 11+

This is a one-way group where the admin shares a worksheet weekly. The worksheets are high-quality and designed specifically for grammar school preparation.

Why Consider This Group?

  • Consistent and reliable content.

  • Great for supplementing your child’s study plan without feeling overwhelmed.

3) 11+ Exam Support Forum’s

This is a dynamic, two-way group where members can ask questions and engage with tutors, teachers, and even book authors. It’s highly active, with quick responses to questions.

Why Consider This Group?

  • Ideal for asking exam-related questions.

  • A supportive community with expert advice.

  • Fantastic for networking with others in the 11+ community.

4) Exam Happy 11+

This interactive group is part of the broader Exam Happy community. The admin shares worksheets, and members actively ask questions, exchange advice, and share resources. The community also includes child groups tailored to specific schools.

Why Consider This Group?

  • A collaborative and supportive environment.

  • Links available for Reading, Slough, Henrietta Barnett, and other school-specific groups.

  • If you’re seeking a group for a particular secondary school, leave a comment, and I’ll help you find it.

5) Grammar Schools Help and Preparation

This group focuses on exam preparation, resources, and problem-solving. However, it’s run by a business and has strict rules against advertising other businesses or tutors.

Why Consider This Group?

  • A professional and resourceful group for exam prep.

  • Perfect for parents looking for structured advice.

6) Sheena’s Free Vocabulary and Comprehension Sessions

Sheena, the author of The Cadwaladr Chronicles, runs free weekly vocabulary and comprehension sessions on Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. These sessions are engaging and tailored for Years 3/4, with a separate session for Year 5 students on Sundays. The sessions take place in a Telegram group, which works similarly to WhatsApp but offers better functionality.

Why Consider This Group?

  • Free sessions designed to improve vocabulary and comprehension skills.

  • Highly engaging and fun for children.

  • A chance to study Trap, the first novel in The Cadwaladr Chronicles series.

My Honest Feedback

Being part of 11+ WhatsApp groups can be incredibly helpful if approached correctly.

However, I recommend staying quiet, observing, and taking notes rather than actively participating. Asking questions about tutors or tuition centres can often lead to removal without explanation. For such queries, Facebook groups are a better platform as they tend to be more open to discussion and debate.

By choosing the right groups and participating strategically, you can access valuable resources, insights, and support for your child’s 11+ journey.
